GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI – At 20 years old, Malik McClendon found himself in the 11th grade, struggling to keep up with school. Having repeated two grades, he faced numerous challenges attending classes regularly. But when a school counselor approached him with a life-changing opportunity, Malik made a choice that would alter his future forever.

“Would you like to graduate this year?” the counselor asked. For Malik, the decision was easy.

With determination in his heart, he enrolled in the 21st Century STEM Academy, an innovative program that utilizes the Grade Results Curriculum. He needed to complete six classes to earn his diploma—a daunting task for many—but Malik was ready to put in the work. One of the aspects he appreciated most about the program was its self-paced structure, allowing him to focus and progress at a rate that worked best for him.

With unwavering perseverance and the encouragement of his mother, sister, and a close family friend, Malik completed all six courses in a single semester. By June 2024, he proudly graduated, achieving what once seemed out of reach. But his journey didn’t stop there.

Shortly after earning his diploma, Malik was hired by the Greenwood-Leflore School District as a member of the maintenance crew, stepping into a new role that allowed him to contribute to the very education system that had once challenged him.

His story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of support. Malik McClendon’s journey proves that setbacks don’t define a person—perseverance does. Today, he stands as an inspiration to others, showing that with the right mindset and support system, success is always within reach.
